Are you leading
from your center
or your wound?
A somatic self-assessment for healthcare leaders
Before healing can begin β individually or collectively β we need to know where we are. The SHIFT C.A.P.E. Assessment measures your organization's readiness for meaningful change. This is not a performance review. There are no wrong answers. It is an act of radical honesty.
Begin the assessment βThe SHIFT Framework
Four dimensions of embodied organizational wellness
C.A.P.E. is the entry point into the SHIFT Embodied Leadership Program β a somatic, trauma-informed coaching system designed for healthcare and human services organizations.
Capacity
The emotional and mental container that holds everything you carry.
How emotionally and mentally available are you right now β in this moment?
0 = completely empty, nothing left to give Β· 10 = fully resourced and present
Reflection
Question 1When you think about your team's collective capacity this week β what is taking up the most space in the container?
Question 2What one thing, if removed or reduced, would meaningfully expand your capacity right now?
Somatic check-in
Where does the weight of your work live in your body? Take three slow belly breaths β 5 counts in, 5 counts out. What do you notice?
Awareness
The act of being consciously present to your emotions, thoughts, and behaviors.
How consciously present are you to your own emotional state during the workday?
0 = running on autopilot Β· 10 = deeply attuned to yourself in real time
Reflection
Question 1Think of a recent moment when you reacted in a way you later regretted. What emotion were you in? Where were you feeling it in your body?
Question 2What is one emotion you notice yourself avoiding or suppressing at work most often? What does that cost you and your team?
Somatic check-in
Name the emotion you are most aware of right now. Scale its intensity 0β10. Take the Sacred Pause β three belly breaths. What shifts?
Perspective
Whose measuring stick are you using?
How much does your current leadership approach reflect your authentic values β vs. what you think others expect of you?
0 = entirely shaped by others' expectations Β· 10 = fully grounded in your own truth
Reflection
Question 1Think about the standards you hold yourself to as a leader. How many were chosen by you β versus inherited from your organization, your field, or your upbringing?
Question 2What would you do differently as a leader if you weren't afraid of how others would perceive you?
Somatic check-in
The SHIFT Care Practice II asks: What is in my best interest? Not your team's. Not your organization's. What do you need right now? Write without editing.
Expectation
Unpacking what perfectionism and hyper-independence are quietly costing you.
How well do the expectations you carry β from yourself and your organization β align with what is realistic and sustainable for a human being?
0 = completely unrealistic, burning you out Β· 10 = fully sustainable and humane
Reflection
Question 1What expectations do you hold for yourself as a leader that, if you're honest, are impossible to sustain? List at least two.
Question 2Does your organizational culture expect staff to deprioritize their own needs in service of the mission? How does that show up in practice?
Affirmation practice
Complete these sentences: "I release the expectation that I must ___. I give myself permission to ___."
